Information Literacy (Synthesis)...(Topic 5)

In The Name of Allah

Under this topic, I have learnt various kinds of information. It was about Synthesizing, which can be defined easily as putting things together.

As Elin Keene defines Synthesis, it is about organizing the different pieces to create a beautiful mosaic, a meaning, a beauty, greater than the sum of each shiny piece.

Even though Elin Keene has defined Synthesis clearly, Nancy Boyles has another definition for it which says that “Synthesis is a matter of seeing how the details fit together to draw a conclusion, how the details solve a mystery, or how they bring characters (and readers) to a new understanding.  Synthesis involves an “aha” moment, when, all of a sudden, everything becomes clear”.

Additionally, Clay has defined synthesizing as it is like putting a puzzle together, You have to sort out your thinking and put it in the right place.

Actually, scholars have different definitions for synthesizing. In my opinion, all of them were right because they had the same idea but with different words.

In fact, we need to put the pieces together in order to construct any kind of meaning in our literacy learning and our life learning, we must find ways to cull and prune the details with which we are bombarded.

I have learnt about synthesis that:

1)      Teaching synthesis is a challenge because it requires more think-aloud modeling on the teacher’s part.

2)      I have to begin a study on synthesis by helping myself to see how readers monitor overall meaning, important concepts, and themes.

3)      I have to Distinguish between facts that are interesting and those that are important.

4)      I have to help myself to learn to retell the most important parts of a story by telling what is important in a way that makes sense and without telling too much.

5)      I might have to create a simple summary.  In fiction, this might be meeting the characters, figuring out where the story took place, and determining the plot.

6)      I have to differentiate between synopsizing and summarizing.

7)      I might need to capitalize on opportunities to share, recommend, and criticize books that I have read.

8)      I will need to extend my synthesis of the literal meaning of a text to the inferential level.

In addition to that, I have learnt that about the process of synthesizing occurs during and after reading when proficient readers.

Then, I learnt how I prompt myself as I try to get the pieces to fit.

Lastly, I was taught the Learning Strategies whether the written response to literature or even the oral responses.

Finally, I would like to send my warm greetings to my adorable lecturers Mr. Azamuddine Bin Abdul Rahman and Miss. Nur Khairunnisha Zainal. I really appreciate what you have done for us; every moment you spent to teach us, every single word we have learnt from you, everything everything!!!
May Allah bless you and grant you with satisfactory deeds by his mercy, Amen!

Information Literacy (citation)...(Topic 4)

In The Name of Allah

Under this topic, I have learnt that citation is any reference occurs in two places:

-        In the text (In text referencing) for example, As Abdulrahman Al-Duais (2013) stated that “…..” (p.20).

-        At the end of the paper (End of text referencing) for example: Abdulrahman Al-Duais, (2013). The best lectures are few. Kedah: Al-Bukhary International University.

Firstly, I have been taught the rules for authors which are:

1)           Authors' names are inverted.
2)           For Muslim and Malaysian name (Chinese and Malay) cite as they are known.
3)           If I have more than one author in a source, I have to use ampersand (&) instead of “and” before the last author.
4)           More than six authors, I have to use et al. for the seventh or more author names.

Secondly, learnt about rules for title that are:
1)           I have to capitalize only the first letter of the first word in titles and subtitles. For example: HOW TO BE A GOOD LECTURER. It should be “How to be a good lecturer”.

2)           I have to Underline or italic the titles of books, titles of journals, titles of magazines and titles of newspaper. For example, “How to be a good lecturer”.

Thirdly, I learnt the Rules for Documentations that are:
1)           Each reference should be in single-spaced.

2)           Indention: Indent the subsequent line about one-half inch (hanging indentation).
3)           I have to arrange the reference list in alphabetical order.
4)           No number in references list.

Finally, I was taught some of the rules that I need to follow while referencing such as:

1)           The format of more than six authors.
2)           The format of more than first edition.
3)           The format of edited books.
4)           The format of books with Author and Editor.
5)           How to make corporate bodies as author.
6)           The format of article from an online periodical with no DOI assigned.

7)           The format of article from an online periodical with DOI assigned.

Information Literacy (Search Strategies)...(Topic 3)

In The Name of Allah

Under this topic, I have learnt many essential pieces of information.

Firstly, about Brainstorming for Search Terms. There are some examples of subject headings such as, library subject headings, science subject headings and thesaurus of psychological index terms.

Secondly, I was briefed about

Boolean Searching that allows me to group words together in an electronic database or environment such as the World Wide Web to receive a number of different types of results.
I have known that by using an AND & NOT between words I limit the search. But, by placing an OR between words it expands the search. Additionally, when I use OR I receive more information because the search engine is looking for two words rather than just one word.

Thirdly, Truncation and Wildcards that broaden my search capabilities by allowing me to retrieve multiple spellings of a root word or word stem, such as singular and plural forms.
I have understood that a wildcard is a special character, such as an asterisk (*), question mark (?), or pound sign (#), that replaces one or more letters in a word. However, Truncation is using a wildcard at the end of a root word to search multiple variations of that root word.

Example of Truncation (teach*…..which will try to find about teach, teacher, teaching…etc.).

Finally, I was taught about Phrase Searching
Which is when I use a string of words (instead of a single word) to search with. By using phrase searching, I will retrieve fewer results for faster searching.

Information Literacy ( Information Resources)...(Topic 2)

In The Name of Allah

So, I am back to Information Literacy again. Under the topic of information resource, I have many things.

Firstly, I was well taught about Primary Sources and what the difference is between original documents and unpublished published works.

I have learnt some of the examples of primary sources such as diaries, letters, interviews, photographs, journals and speeches.

Secondly, I learnt about the Secondary Source which is something written about a primary source.
There are some of the examples of secondary source such as interpret primary sources, examination of studies, second hand opinions, journal articles, books, radio and TV documentaries.

I have also learnt that a biography is when you write about another person’s life.

ThirdlyTertiary sources which is a distillation and collection of primary and secondary sources and includes most types of references.

Examples of Tertiary sources are bibliographies of bibliography, directories of directories and guides to the literature.

Fourthly, Reference Sources, which provide short (to-the-point) information and not for continuous reading. It should be arranged in an alphabetical order or according to any classification scheme such as, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Directories, Atlases and maps.

Moreover, I have learnt the difference between encyclopedias and dictionaries.

Lastly, Biographical Sources that is a directory of notable persons, usually arranged alphabetically by surnames with biographical identification.

Information Literacy (BIG 6)..,(Topic 1)

In The Name of Allah

We have just started our studies under the (ICT) but for this trimester is only (Information Literacy). This kind of studies is very important for us especially for our foundation studies.

First, Information Literacy is the ability to read, write and extract the information as well as possible.

Under this topic, we have studied many things under the supervision of our two respective lecturers Miss: Nur Khairunisha and Mr Azzumedein Bin Abdul Rahman.

The big 6 is one of the basic concepts in this course, it talks about:

1) the task definition.
2) Information seeking
behavior.
3) Location and access.
4) The use of information.
5) The synthesis.
6) Evaluation.

I have understood that the actual meaning of the Big 6 which is arranged stages in searching the information is that it helps people to identify and solve the problems in that different kinds of information in order to make decisions and reach the objectives.

Finally, I would like to thank our respective lecturers for spending much time to teach us this course even though, we know that they are not supposed to teach us but due to some incidents happened, they needed to do that, so thanks a lot, I will try my best to learn more and more about this course.

Web Application

                In The Name of Allah

Thank Allah, we are almost finished with  IT subject. The last topic was about Web Application

The application is a piece of software and it can run on any electronic devices. The most important thing in this chapter I learnt are the differences between the two types of web applications.

Static Web:

it is also known as web 1.0. it is considered as the 'read - only web'. It allows people to search for information and read it. But most importantly it is not interactive, there is no room for editing from external parties nor contribution whatsoever.

Dynamic Web:

It is also considered as web 2.0. Unlike web 1.0, it is quite interactive with its external parties. Examples of this web are twitter, Facebook, MySpace etc.

Including this topic we learnt many things:

First, Web applications commonly use a combination of:

1. SCRIPT.

2. CLIENT AND SERVER.

Second, we have been taught the different generations of the web :

1. 1st generation: Web 1.0.
2. 2nd generation: Web 2.0.

3. 3rd generation: Web 3.0.

Third, we learnt about online social networking which involves websites that are known as social sites

Forth,we learnt that as an example of web 2.0 online social networking, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and so on.

Fifth, I have learnt the two types of Programming Language, low level language which is a machine-dependent language and high level language which is more user-friendly. To be honest, this topic was a very useful topic in the whole IT.

Sixth, our  lecturer taught us more about this topic in the lab class and I hope I remember everything about this topic because this week was very stressful  for me, too.

Finally, it is very hard and touchable to claim that this is the end of this semester. Even though, I cannot forget the favor which Miss NISHA has given us. In other words, I shall say it loudly and honestly that THANK YOU MISS NISHA, my Allah bless you and keep you safe, healthy and wealthy.

First, Any way, this essential
topic was about database. It was very meaningful and and important part of studying IT.  From what I have been taught, I have realized that the definition of database and some examples of it.

Second, the components of database which are:
1. data items.
2. relationships.
3. constraints
4. schema.

Third, I have realized that how database save the applications in optimal way. Moreover, our lecturer has explained for us the definition of DBMS (Database Management System), and its functions which are:
- create/organize database.
- input data.
- process data.
- maintain data and query database.

In fact, database system makes me more aware about how to maintain and record  the information.

Forth, I have realized the terms of database terminology and our lecturer explained everything about that topic clearly.

Finally, this subject (database) was very benefit for me to get more information about Information Technology section which  I hope I can learn more about.
